Your eyes are the same color
as the great lakes,
all the sand and sky
surrounding my palm.
From the top of the dunes,
I look into you.
We have been covered in sand
for thousands of years
and now I am brushing the grains
from your brow,
all this rock that’s shattered
around our bodies.

I swam across Lake Michigan
to look for you on the other side,
but you had the water from my home
in your gaze,
the million trees growing under your hair.
The fury of the waves couldn’t keep me from you,
even if I watch you from the shore
as the flames consume the land apart.
